The World-Renowned Highway 1 & Big Sur Coast Highway in and Around Carmel, CA
California Highway One, sometimes referred as Big Sur Coast Highway or Pacific Coast Route 1, is the best-known scenic drive in the world. It’s been named “One of the world’s best drives” by London’s Sunday Times, and “Drive of a Lifetime” by National Geographic Traveler.
On this fabled coastline, redwood groves reach skyward, the Santa Lucia Range plunges into the sea, and waves are beaten to froth on ragged rocks. It’s a place of elemental power that can make human affairs seem inconsequential. This is a must-do drive when visiting California.
Location-Directions
Highway One starts 1 mile from the Carmel Green Lantern Inn. The twisting, cliff-hugging, 26 miles route along the Pacific Ocean to Big Sur takes about 45 minutes to complete.
